Subtitle generation used to cost me somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes per episode. Not creative time. Not judgment time. Scrubbing through a timeline, typing, correcting, nudging in-points, correcting again. The same physical loop repeated until every word was accounted for. With DaVinci Resolve 21's AI subtitle engine, that same task now runs in about 23 minutes, most of which is the software doing the work while I do something else.

That's roughly half the time. On a single task that was never interesting to begin with.

If you multiply that pattern across a real editing workflow, you start to see what's actually happening with AI in post-production right now. It's not replacing editors. It's compressing the unglamorous half of the job into something fast enough to almost disappear. Whether that's good news depends entirely on what you do with the time it frees.


What "Killing the Tedious 80%" Actually Means

The 80/20 framing isn't original, but it fits. If you've spent serious time on a real client timeline, you know that most editing hours aren't spent making creative decisions. They're spent doing the work that supports creative decisions: syncing audio, pulling selects, building rough assemblies, cleaning up dialogue, generating transcripts, rendering proxies, tagging clips.

These tasks aren't meaningless. A badly synced timeline or a sloppy rough cut makes every creative decision downstream harder. But they're also not where your value as an editor actually lives. They're infrastructure. And infrastructure is exactly where AI is landing hardest.

That's not a crisis. It's a restructuring. And 16 years on a professional timeline has taught me that every restructuring in this industry rewards the people who understand what they were actually selling in the first place.


The Work That Doesn't Compress

There's a category of editing decisions that AI tools aren't touching in any meaningful way, and probably won't touch cleanly for a while. Not because the technology isn't advancing, but because these decisions aren't really about pattern recognition. They're about judgment applied to human behavior.

Narrative pacing is the clearest example. Deciding where a scene breathes, where it needs to move faster, when a cut creates energy versus when it creates confusion: these are calls that require understanding not just what's happening on screen but why it matters to a specific audience at a specific moment in a story. An AI system can analyze a cut structure and flag it as statistically atypical. It can't tell you whether atypical is right.

Performance selection sits in the same category. In a talking-head interview, you might have 15 takes of someone explaining a concept. The technically cleanest take might not be the one that actually lands. There's often a version that has a stumble in it, a slight hesitation before a key word, that communicates something the polished version doesn't. Selecting it requires understanding what the stumble means in context, what emotional texture it adds, whether the subject's eyes are doing something in that moment that matters. That's editorial judgment, and it's not something that compresses to a prompt.

According to JobForesight's analysis of the editing labor market, routine assembly work is already heavily automated in many production pipelines, while complex narrative pacing and emotional arc work retain a clear human premium. That premium isn't guaranteed to be permanent, but it does tell you where the floor of irreplaceable value currently sits.

The editors who are going to feel the most pressure from AI tools are the ones who built their value proposition primarily around technical execution speed: the person who was valuable because they could move fast through a sync session or build a clean rough cut in an afternoon. That work is compressing. The people who built their value around story instinct and editorial judgment are in a better position, because those skills are harder to replicate and also harder for clients to fully articulate, which means clients can't easily spec-shop for them.


The Part Nobody Is Talking About Enough

Here's where I want to slow down, because this is the part of the AI editing conversation that gets treated as a footnote when it deserves to be a main section.

When a tool is fast and good enough, it becomes the default. Not because someone decided it was the best creative choice, but because it was already there and it already worked. This is what Nigel Camp calls the "convenience makes creative decisions" problem, and it's more insidious than the job displacement question.

Think about what happens with an AI depth-of-field tool like CineFocus. Say you're finishing a piece and a shot is slightly soft. Color grading, motion smoothing, audio restoration, all of these tools can produce results that are technically better by measurable standards and less true to the source material. When you're moving fast, which is the whole point of using these tools, you're less likely to catch that drift before it compounds across a project.

This isn't an argument against using the tools. It's an argument for maintaining active editorial oversight of every decision they make, which requires more deliberate attention when you're working faster, not less. The speed benefit only accrues without a creative cost if you stay conscious of what you're accepting.

The Firecut research on AI editing adoption makes a point that's easy to read past: the real value of AI in editing is that it reclaims time for storytelling. That's accurate. But time reclaimed is only valuable if it actually gets applied to storytelling and not just absorbed by a faster production schedule that leaves the same cognitive overhead for craft as before. Convenience, if you're not careful, reclaims time on your behalf and then disappears it into a tighter turnaround rather than deeper creative work.


What This Restructuring Actually Asks of You

If you've been editing professionally for more than a few years, you've watched the cost of technical execution drop before. Nonlinear editing systems made the physical cut-and-splice process obsolete. Color grading moved from a specialized room to every editor's laptop. Each time, the argument that "the tools are replacing editors" turned out to be less accurate than "the tools are changing what editors need to be good at."

This moment is that kind of shift, probably a larger one, but the same species.

According to reap.video's analysis of where AI is taking the editing profession, the skills that matter going forward are strategic judgment, clip selection from large media volumes, and understanding audience performance: what works, why it works, and how to make decisions based on that feedback. These aren't new skills for experienced editors. They're the skills that were always underneath the technical execution, just less visible because execution consumed so much time.

What the AI toolset is doing, at its best, is making those underlying skills more legible. When a rough assembly takes two hours instead of six, the four hours you get back aren't just available time. They're an opportunity to spend more cycles on the cut that comes after the rough assembly, on the pacing decisions, on the structural choices that make a good piece instead of an acceptable one.

That's only going to happen if you're deliberate about it. The default will always be to take the efficiency gain and move on to the next job. That's a rational short-term choice and a slow medium-term erosion of the skills that make you irreplaceable.

The editors who are positioning themselves well right now are the ones treating AI tools the same way they treat any other piece of kit: useful for specific jobs, requiring calibration, never a substitute for knowing what you're trying to make. They're learning which tasks to hand off confidently and which ones to keep close. They're watching their own instincts more carefully when the workflow moves faster.


A Grounded Assessment

DaVinci Resolve 21 and the broader wave of AI editing tools are genuinely useful. The subtitle numbers are real. The time savings on infrastructure tasks are real. For working editors managing realistic production volumes, these tools matter in concrete, measurable ways.

They also carry a specific risk that isn't about job displacement. It's about letting convenience accumulate into creative direction, letting the fastest available option become the default choice before you've decided whether it's the right one. That risk is quiet and gradual, which makes it harder to catch than the dramatic version of "AI is taking over editing."

After 16 years of watching this industry evolve, my read is this: the editors who treat AI tools as infrastructure, who use them to clear the rote work so they can spend more time on judgment, will be better at their jobs in three years than they are now. The editors who treat AI tools as the point, who let faster workflow become the goal rather than the means, will find that their craft has slowly flattened in ways they can't easily identify or correct.

The tools are good. The question is what you do when they give you the time back.
